Happy Friday, AI watchers. This week closed out with a bang – here is what you need to know from the last few hours.

Meta Slashes 8,000 Jobs – Blames AI Spending

Meta just announced it is cutting 10% of its workforce – roughly 8,000 employees – with layoffs scheduled for May 20. This is Meta’s biggest round of cuts since 2023. Zuckerberg said “2026 is going to be the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way we work.” Translation: your job might be next. The company is also closing 6,000 open roles. All of this to fund its massive AI infrastructure push.

Microsoft Taps Anthropic’s Claude Mythos for Cybersecurity

Microsoft is integrating Anthropic’s new Claude Mythos Preview model into its secure coding framework. The goal is using frontier AI to detect vulnerabilities faster than human security teams can. Mythos has reportedly already flagged thousands of severe vulnerabilities during early testing. This is part of Anthropic’s “Project Glasswing” – a controlled rollout to major tech companies. The AI security arms race is very much on.

Tesla Raises 2026 Capex to $25 Billion

Tesla bumped its capital spending guidance from $20B to $25B for 2026 after its Q1 earnings report. The extra billions are going toward six factory ramps, Optimus robot production starting July, doubling AI compute capacity, and building a chip fab in Austin. Analysts note this implies strongly negative free cash flow for the rest of the year – but Musk is betting the farm on AI and robotics being Tesla’s future.

Hot Take: Meta Is Now Keylogging Its Own Employees

In what might be the most dystopian AI story of the week, Reuters reported that Meta is installing software on US employees’ computers to capture mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes, and screen content – all to train AI models that can do work tasks autonomously. The program is mandatory. Employees are reportedly furious. Hacker News had a field day: “Once you cross that line, your thought workers are assets, not people.” Hard to argue with that.
