The Test: 5 Real Projects

1. Cursor Pro – Still the King ($20/month) – 94/100

Cursor with Claude Sonnet 4 is the most productive coding environment available. Tab-completion is eerily accurate. Multi-file editing understands context across your entire codebase. Agent mode built a full-stack app from spec in 40 minutes.

2. Claude Code CLI ($20-200/month) – 91/100

Terminal magic. Reads your repo, understands patterns, generates code that fits your style. The agentic loop runs tests, fixes failures, and iterates without hand-holding. Won the debugging project – fixed 43 of 47 tests autonomously vs Cursor’s 38 and Copilot’s 29.

3. Windsurf ($15/month) – 82/100

The dark horse. Cascade feature (multi-step agentic coding) is genuinely innovative. Handled refactoring better than Copilot. Best value in AI coding.

4. GitHub Copilot ($10-39/month) – 78/100

Reliable, well-integrated, corporate-approved. But fallen behind on agentic capabilities. Autocomplete good but Cursor is better. Chat decent but Claude is superior.

5. Augment Code ($30-60/month) – 75/100

Built for large codebases. Impressive context handling for 500K+ line repos. But raw code quality does not match Cursor or Claude Code yet.

My Recommendation

• Most developers: Cursor Pro ($20/month). Not close.
• Terminal-native devs: Claude Code + Cursor Pro ($40/month).
• Budget-conscious: Windsurf at $15/month – 85% of Cursor at 75% of the price.
• Enterprise: Copilot if IT mandates it. Push for Cursor if you have a say.
