Happy Monday evening, AI friends. Here is what happened in AI today while you were busy prompting.
ChatGPT Goes Down – Again
If ChatGPT felt sluggish this morning, you were not imagining it. OpenAI confirmed a major outage starting around 10 AM ET on April 20 that rolled into today, with over 8,700 reports in the UK and nearly 2,000 in the US at peak. Both ChatGPT and Codex were affected. OpenAI says they are “monitoring the recovery,” which is corporate for “we are still figuring it out.” The memes on X were, as always, top-tier.

UK Drops Half a Billion on Sovereign AI
The UK government officially launched its Sovereign AI Unit – a state-backed venture fund worth 500 million pounds ($675M). Tech Secretary Liz Kendall announced the initiative from Wayve HQ in London. Selected British AI startups will get funding between 1M and 20M pounds, access to 1 million GPU hours of compute, fast-track visas, and regulatory support. Think of it as the UK saying “we are not letting the US and China have all the fun.” First investments are already rolling out.
Amazon’s AI Strategy Is a Mess (Says Amazon)
A leaked internal document obtained by Business Insider reveals that Amazon’s aggressive AI push is creating a mess of duplicate tools, orphaned data, and overlapping systems internally. The document reportedly says the problem is getting “worse.” Meanwhile, on Hacker News, Amazon employees are commenting that they have “made no revenue, let alone profit from any AI feature” – while watching new AI-titled roles get hired at seven or eight figure compensation packages. Layoffs are reportedly being prepared. Classic big-tech AI gold rush energy.
Vercel Hacked via AI Supply Chain
A breach at Context.ai – an AI observability startup – cascaded into a supply chain attack on Vercel, exposing limited customer credentials. A Context.ai employee was reportedly compromised with Lumma Stealer malware back in February, which may have triggered the escalation. There is now a $2M data sale claim floating around. If you are building on Vercel, worth checking your credentials.

Hot Take from the Trenches
Reddit and Hacker News are buzzing about the Amazon story. The consensus? Big companies are hiring “AI leaders” at absurd comp while the actual builders get layoff notices. One HN commenter nailed it: the AI boom at large companies is starting to look a lot like the crypto boom – lots of titles, lots of spending, not a lot of revenue. Sound familiar?
